Teddy Bear's Picnic

Join Mr Bear and make a range of delicious picnic foods with your KS1 class. You'll learn about different types of foods and have the chance to explore a variety of picnic foods. Your Year 1 or Year 2 class will design, create and evaluate their own picnic snacks from rainbow omelette cakes to delicious and nutritious kebabs!

This practical KS1 DT scheme of work provides detailed lesson plans, engaging slides (including letters from Teddy asking children to help him out with a variety of picnic problems!), differentiated activities and a whole host of other helpful resources. All you need to provide is the ingredients!

Farmed, Caught and Grown

The first lesson in this series helps you children to learn all about a variety of picnic foods, discovering where foods came from and whether they were farmed, caught or grown. The lesson opens with your class receiving a letter from Mr Bear. Then they can either make a healthy rainbow omelette cake or plan the food they would like to take on a picnic.

Explore and Taste

This lesson introduces your class to different types of picnic food as they taste and explore what is put in front of them. Your class will enjoy learning all about the eatwell guide and help Mr Bear to pack a balanced picnic basket.

This lesson encourages the class to think about different foods that would be suitable to take on a picnic. They are then challenged to help Mr Bear by making delicious Teddy Bear Biscuits!

In this lesson the children will be reminded about the 'Eatwell Guide' and they will design their own picnic skewer for Mr Bear. They will have the opportunity to make savoury and sweet skewers that are both delicious and nutritious.

Now that your class have designed their own picnic skewers, they will have the opportunity to make and evaluate them using their design sheets from the previous lesson.

Evaluating

In this final lesson the children will have the chance to recall the picnic food they have made over the past few lessons with a make-believe picnic! They will evaluate their final products and think about whether or not they helped Mr Bear by creating a healthy and delicious picnic.
