Roman Invaders

The first lesson in this series introduces your class to the Roman invaders who came to Britain, and explores why people choose to invade and settle other lands. The included slideshow goes through these points and also help your class to place the Romans on a timeline.

During their independent learning, children can then further consider the meaning of the terms 'invade' and 'settle', or further their understanding of when the Roman invaders came to Britain, comparing with other familiar events and civilisations.

The Roman Army

This fun Roman Army KS2 lesson will teach your Year 3/4 class all about Roman soldiers and how the Roman army was organised. The included slideshow presentation goes through some fascinating information about the Roman army and how it became such a formidable force. They will find out how the army was organised, what a Roman soldier wore, and some of the strategies and techniques they used.

Celtic Life

This KS2 Celts lesson explores what Celtic life was like for the people living in Britain before the Romans invaded. The included slideshow for the teaching input gives your class some basic background information about the Celts (or Britons as they were known by the Romans) and studies some accounts of what the Celts were like from some Roman historians.

During their independent learning, your class can then carry out their own research into what daily life was like for the Celts. There's even a fun board game included that will help them learn what Celtic life was like!

Who Was Boudicca?

In this KS2 Boudicca lesson, your Year 3 or Year 4 class will find out how not everyone welcomed the Romans when they arrived in Britain. It looks at the story of Boudicca (or Boudica or Boadicea) and why, as queen of the Iceni tribe, she was so against the Roman invaders. The lesson then goes on to look at Boudicca from the viewpoint of both the Celts and Romans, using historical sources to identify the reasons behind different points of view.

During their independent learning, children will consider what Boudicca was like for themselves, both from what they have learnt and from artist's impressions and written accounts.

Boudicca's Revolt

Now that your class know who she is, they can look in more detail at Boudicca's revolt. They will explore why it was initially so successful, but then ultimately failed. Children will be encouraged to discuss and explain their views and opinions of the queen of the Iceni tribe, as well as thinking about the effect Boudicca's revolt had on the people of Britain.

During their independent tasks, your class can retell the story of Boudicca's revolt using a storyboard, or write diary entries about the revolt as if they were Boudicca.

Life in Roman Britain

This Life in Roman Britain KS2 History lesson for Year 3 or Year 4 challenges your class to find out what life in Roman Britain was like for ordinary people. The slides for the teaching input first challenge children to establish what they can learn from a variety of pictures, then goes through some information about some different aspects of how life in Britain changed after the Romans arrived.

Their independent learning activities then give them more of an opportunity to find out more about daily life and some of the changes that the people of Britain experienced under Roman rule.

What the Romans did for us

This fascinating lesson looks at what the Romans did for us and how their occupation of Britain changed the country forever. The slides start by exploring the collapse of the Roman Empire and when the Roman rule of Britain came to end. It then goes on to look at the lasting impact the Romans had on Britain, even after they left.

During the children's independent learning activities, they will have the chance to consolidate their understanding of what the Romans did for us and some of the inventions and systems we still use today that the Romans left behind.
