Florence Nightingale: The Lady with the Lamp
This Florence Nightingale KS2 lesson introduces your class to the life and achievements of the famous ‘lady with the lamp’, who became well known for caring for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. At a time when hospitals were dirty and unsafe, Florence worked hard to improve cleanliness, nursing care and hospital conditions, helping to shape modern nursing and healthcare practices still used today.
ÂLesson 1: Florence Nightingale
Children will first look at and describe some pictures of modern-day hospitals, before exploring what hospitals and nursing used to be like in the Victorian era. They will then find out about the early life of Florence Nightingale, and her decision to become a nurse. Children will learn about the changes she made to a hospital she ran during the Crimean War, and how she continued to campaign to improve the hygiene and care in hospitals throughout her life.
In their independent activities, your class will apply their knowledge of the differences Florence Nightingale’s work made to hospitals and their patients. In the alternative activity, children are challenged to complete a timeline of the important events in her life.
