Investigating Lighthouses

In this lesson the children will investigate lighthouses and how they were used before GPS navigation. They will lay a foundation of understanding before looking at Grace Darling's story in the next lesson.

Use the included engaging lesson slides to discuss how lighthouses were used to keep sailors safe along the coasts and around dangerous rocky areas. The children are challenged in the differentiated independent activities to label a lighthouse and use word banks to complete a short description of what a lighthouse, and its keeper does.

This lesson focuses on the incredible story of how Grace Darling and her father rescued nine people from a shipwreck near the lighthouse where they lived in Northumberland.

The children are challenged to sequence the story of the night that Darling became famous for. There are child-friendly illustrations to help support your children in sequencing the story. You may like to challenge your class to illustrate the story themselves.

The alternative 'Fancy something different...?' activity challenges your class to create freeze frames from Darling's story and take photographs to sequence at a later time.

Darling Celebration

This final lesson looks at the effect that Darling had on the nation after her daring rescue. The children will look at and discuss the different ways that Grace Darling became a national hero once people heard of her story.

Challenge your class to become museum curators and write a short paragraph about who Darling was and why we remember her. Or, the children can create their own artwork to commemorate Darling's achievements.
