History | The history of the Olympic Games

In this first lesson, your class will be introduced to the Olympic Games. They will learn that the very first games were held in Ancient Greece, but that the modern Olympics (the Games as we know them) began in 1896.

As a class, children will explore and compare the Games of 1896, 1948 and 2012, and talk about how they have changed over time. In their independent activities, they will use sources to spot similarities and differences between the 1896 and the 2012 Olympic Games.

Geography | Navigating maps

This lesson introduces your class to maps and directional language. Your class will use a compass rose and grid squares to find locations on maps of Paris, France and Europe.

During the independent learning section of the lesson, your class will be able to use a map key and follow directions from one location to another. Alternatively, they can create their own directions to navigate between points on a map.

Science | The effect of exercise on our bodies

In this lesson, children will find out about different Olympic sports and learn why exercise is important. They will think about how exercise makes our bodies strong. They will then try some different exercises and notice the effect they have on their bodies.

The children will be encouraged to think like scientists as they make observations about their bodies, including the effects on their mental and physical health. This lesson ends with the children all taking part in a cool-down sequence of movements.

PE | Performing Freeze Frames of Olympic Sports

Children will first find out what a pictogram is, and how they are used in relation to the Olympic Games. In the main part of the PE lesson, they will explore how to recreate different Olympic sport pictograms by making different shapes with their bodies.

Children work in pairs or small groups to develop a sequence of different freeze-framed sports. They then present their sequence to the rest of the class who are challenged to identify the different sports being represented. In the alternative activity, children play a version of Simon Says involving different freeze-framed sports.

Art | Exploring and designing Olympic logos

In this lesson, children will first find out what a logo is, and then explore and discuss some of the past Olympic Games logos, and how they each represent the host city.

In their independent activities, children are challenged to design a logo for the upcoming Olympic Games, based on what they have found out from analysing past logos. They need to think carefully about how they will link the logo to the host city.

DT | Designing and making an Olympic mascot

Children will first explore some of the past Olympic mascots, before looking at how they could design and make their own mascot.

As a class, children are shown how they could either make a mascot using fabric and sewing skills, or using recycled materials and different joining materials. In their independent activities, children design and then make their mascot from their chosen materials. A mini class evaluation encourages children to think critically about their completed mascot.
