History | Origins and Traditions

In this first lesson, children learn about the original Games in ancient Greece, before finding out about the modern Olympic Games, which began in 1896. As a class, they look at some of the changes that have occurred between the first modern Games and now.

In their independent activities, children research and discuss some of the traditions associated with the Olympic Games, including the Olympic Rings, the Olympic Flame, the Opening Ceremony, the Medals Ceremonies, The Olympic Oath, Creed and Motto, and Olympic Mascots.

Geography | Locating Continents and Countries

After discussing the definitions of 'city', 'country' and 'continent', as a class, children use maps to locate some of the continents and countries that have hosted the Summer Olympics since 1896.

Children continue this task in their independent activities, labelling and creating keys for their own maps. In the alternative activity, they work in pairs to identify which Olympic Games have been held in which continent.

PE | Gymnastics

After being inspired by videos of Olympic athletes, your class are challenged to choreograph and perform their own gymnastics routines.

In small groups, children are given different levels of challenges to work through. They will then perform their routine to the rest of the class, and be scored by their peers on execution and skill.

Art | Olympic Medals

In this lesson, children will learn that the design of Olympic medals changes with each Games.

They will research and review the designs of past medals before generating design ideas for medals for their own school games. Children then learn and apply engraving techniques or use graphic design to make their medals.

DT | Olympic-themed Packaging

In this lesson, children will think about the importance of packaging for a product, and how it can both inform and attract consumers.

For their main activity, children are challenged to design the packaging for an Olympic-themed energy bar aimed at athletes, and then create their design using nets provided. In the alternative activity, children are tasked with creating a packaging label for a healthy smoothie aimed at athletes.
