Lesson 1

History | Origins and Traditions

In this first lesson, children learn about the original Games in ancient Greece, before finding out about the modern Olympic Games, which began in 1896. As a class, they look at some of the changes that have occurred between the first modern Games and now.

In their independent activities, children research and discuss some of the traditions associated with the Olympic Games, including the Olympic Rings, the Olympic Flame, the Opening Ceremony, the Medals Ceremonies, The Olympic Oath, Creed and Motto, and Olympic Mascots.

Geography | Locating Continents and Countries

After discussing the definitions of 'city', 'country' and 'continent', as a class, children use maps to locate some of the continents and countries that have hosted the Summer Olympics since 1896.

Children continue this task in their independent activities, labelling and creating keys for their own maps. In the alternative activity, they work in pairs to identify which Olympic Games have been held in which continent.

In small groups, children are given different levels of challenges to work through. They will then perform their routine to the rest of the class, and be scored by their peers on execution and skill.
