This 'A Million Numbers' scheme of work for Year 5 will help your class to refine their understanding of the number system and will help them to become more familiar with large numbers. They will learn to read and write large numbers both in words and numerals, compare numbers with up to seven digits, round numbers to a specified degree of accuracy and learn how to read Roman numerals.

Lesson 1: Identifying Large Numbers

The first lesson in this series starts by helping children to identify the value of each digit in numbers with up to seven digits. They will have some practise at writing numbers in both words and digits, as well as decomposing numbers to help identify the value of each digit. There’s lots going on in this lesson but it will all help secure their understanding of larger numbers!

Lesson 2: Comparing Numbers

Now that your class can identify the value of different five- and six-digit numbers, they can start comparing and ordering them! The slides start by looking at the populations of some different UK cities, identifying which have the highest and lowest populations and using the < and > symbols to show this. The main activities provide a fun game that will set children competing to get the highest numbers, and there are lots of challenges the children can tackle too!

Lesson 3: Rounding Numbers

The slides for this lesson teach your class how to round numbers up to a million to a given degree of accuracy. The slides go through the process for how to round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand and hundred thousand, giving them opportunities to practise this with a variety of numbers with up to six digits. The can then practise this for themselves during their independent learning or create a rounding quiz to test a friend with!
