Let’s Find Fractions

Dive into the world of fractions with your class by exploring how fractions can be parts of shapes, measurements and numbers. Teach your class to find halves, thirds, quarters and three quarters of various shapes, numbers and quantities by investigating and discussing their ideas. Encourage them to develop their reasoning skills by telling you why some shapes don’t show a given fraction, or explaining how to find half of a shape or number.

Halves and quarters

Re-introduce your class to finding halves and quarters of shapes before investigating some familiar and trickier shapes. Challenge your class to find different ways to halve and quarter shapes and record these as written fractions.

Halves, quarters and thirds

Investigate the meanings of the different numbers in a written fraction and demonstrate how this is shown when finding fractions of shape. Challenge your class to show the same fraction in different ways, beginning to make links between the equivalence of ½ and 2⁄4 .

Introduce your class to the concept of finding fractions of amounts, using their understanding of fractions of shapes. Challenge the children to make links between division and finding fractions of numbers by sharing quantities equally between groups.

More than one quarter

Build on the learning your class has achieved in the previous lesson by exploring how we represent more than one piece of a fraction. Investigate how this looks when showing three quarters of a shape and use this visual to find three quarters of quantities as well.

Challenge your class to apply what they’ve learnt about fractions by solving practical problems. Explore different ways that items could be shared by splitting them into fraction pieces to make sure that they’re being shared equally.
