Measuring Capacity

This Measuring Capacity Year 4 planning pack will consolidate and build upon your class' knowledge and understanding of measuring capacity through five-ready-to-teach capacity lessons.

Children will first recap on the relationship between litres and millilitres before moving onto estimate, measure, order and compare capacity. They will then apply their knowledge and understanding to solve a range of problems, including those involving money.

Convert Between Different Units of Measure

Your Year 4 children will learn how to convert between different units of measure in the first lesson of our ready-to-teach Measuring Capacity scheme of work.

After recapping what capacity is and which units it can be measured in, your class will use their knowledge and understanding of multiplication, division and place value to convert between the different units of measurement, involving numbers with up to two decimal places. Children apply and consolidate this learning in their independent activities.

Estimating and Measuring

In this Estimating and Measuring Capacity lesson, your Year 4 children are first reminded of what an estimate is, before using known capacities of containers to estimate the capacity of other containers. They then look at how to measure capacity accurately, and learn how to read different scales by calculating what each division represents.

In their independent activities, children complete a carousel of challenges involving estimating, measuring and reading scales.

This Capacity Word Problems Year 4 Maths lesson challenges your class to apply their knowledge and understanding of converting between different units of measurement to solve a variety of capacity problems involving addition and subtraction.

In their independent activities, they are challenged to solve a range of word problems about a given set of measures. In the alternative activity, children use their knowledge to play a game involving gaining and losing different amounts of water.

Money Word Problems

In this Money Word Problems Year 4 lesson, your children will combine their knowledge and understanding of measuring capacity, as well as their multiplication, division and addition skills, to solve a variety of two- and multi-step problems involving money.

In their independent activities, they work out the cost of different drinks for a new health shop called Gulp!, or in the alternative activity, design and cost their own drinks based on a set of given criteria.
