Lesson 1

Exploring the character of Odd

In this first 'Odd and the Frost Giants' lesson plan, your class will read Chapter 1 of the book together, and discuss what has happened so far.

In their independent activities they will focus on the main character of Odd, using their inference and deduction skills to explore his thoughts, behaviours and actions further. In the alternative activity they are challenged to put themselves into Odd's shoes, and write a short diary entry explaining what has happened to him in the last two years, and inferring how he feels about this.

Comparing and Contrasting Characters

Children will read Chapters 2 and 3 of 'Odd and the Frost Giants' together, discussing both the unfolding events and the new characters of the fox, the bear and the eagle.

In their activities, children will focus on analysing and describing the personality traits and behaviours of the three animals. Or, if the FSD? activity is chosen, they are challenged to create an imagined role-play of the interaction between the three animals just before Odd meets them.

After recapping on what has happened in the book so far, children will continue to read and discuss Chapters 4 and 5 of 'Odd and the Frost Giants' as a class.

Based on what has happened so far, children are challenged to make predictions about what will happen next, then put them in order of 'least likely' to 'most likely', justifying their choices based on their knowledge of events and characters in the book. In the alternative activity, children read the provided myth of Odin and Mimir's Well, using this to help them predict what might happen next and why.

Once they have recapped on their predictions from the previous lesson, children will read and discuss Chapter 6 of 'Odd and the Frost Giants' together.

Children are challenged to use extracts from the text to infer and explain the different emotions that the Frost Giant experiences throughout his conversation with Odd. In the alternate activity, they will take on the persona of the Frost Giant, then write and perform a monologue revealing what he thinks and feels about the situation he finds himself in.
