Which direction?

This week’s worth of lessons for Year 1 children focuses on position, direction and motion. Your class will use a range of vocabulary including: left and right, top, middle and bottom, on top of, in front of, above, between, around, near, close and far, up and down, forwards and backwards, inside and outside. Your class will work practically to understand whole, half, quarter and three-quarter turns in both directions and link their knowledge of a clock face with clockwise and anticlockwise movement.

Where is it?

The first lesson in this scheme of work will get your class becoming familiar with the language of position. They will use a range of vocabulary including top, middle, bottom, on top of, in front of, above, between, around, near, close, far, up, down, below, underneath and behind to describe the location of a range of objects. This lesson is bound to encourage your class to think carefully about the language they use and the importance of being precise with their word choice.

Left and right

During this lesson your class will use the language of left and right. They will follow and give instructions as they create pictures. This lesson will give your class the opportunity to become confident in their ability to identify left and right as they develop their speaking and listening skills.

Describing turns

The third lesson in this Year 1 position and direction scheme of work introduces your class to the concept of whole, half and quarter turns as well as clockwise and anticlockwise movements. The lesson gives your class the opportunity to give and follow instructions as they work practically with their peers solving problems.

The final lesson in this Maths scheme of work for Year 1, gives your class the chance to demonstrate and use the position and direction language they know.
