Welcome to the world of puppets! This Puppets KS1 DT lesson planning pack is full of fun activities and projects for your Year 2 class as they find out how to work with fabric to create their own puppets. Starting off by looking at simple finger puppets, your class will then develop and refine their sewing skills before designing, creating and evaluating their own glove puppets.

These Puppets KS1 lessons provide everything you need to deliver these engaging and challenging DT lessons. There are six lessons in total in this scheme and each lesson comes with an easy-to-follow lesson plan, a slideshow for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources, including step-by-step instruction sheets, to support your Year 2 children as they design, make and evaluate their own fabric glove puppets.

Lesson 1

Investigating Puppets

This Investigating Puppets lesson for Year 2 introduces your class to a variety of different types of puppets (such as marionettes, finger puppets, glove puppets and sock puppets) and gives them the chance to explore their features and how they move.

The slideshow presentation for the teaching input shows some images of a variety of puppets for your class to discuss together. During their independent work they can then either sketch and label the different features of different puppets using picture cards or explore a variety of puppets themselves if you have some available.

This lesson comes fully planned and ready to deliver to your class. There's an easy-to-follow lesson plan, a slideshow presentation, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable teaching resources.

Making Finger Puppets

In this Making Finger Puppets lesson for Year 2, your children will explore what finger puppets are before learning how to work with felt to make their own finger puppets!

The included slideshow presentation goes through some clear step-by-step photos to show your class how to create fun finger puppets from a simple template, using felt and fabric glue. They can then work independently to design and make their own finger puppets. Alternatively, children can work as a group to create the puppets needed to retell a particular story, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
